Lohri is a native festival of Punjab, mostly celebrated by Sikhs and Hindus. It is celebrated to mark the passing of the winter solstice, just the day before Makar Sankranti. Huge bonfires are lit, followed by amazing Punjabi food and great music. People love this festival because of two reasons- The beautiful and warm bonfire and the food, which is specially prepared for this festival. The food is a very important part of this festival and now, in this article, we will provide you with the recipes of 5 dishes which will make your Lohri just perfect.

Ingredients:  2 cups of Fine Besan by Desi Atta Company, ½ cups of ghee, ¾ cup of powdered sugar, ¼ tablespoon of cardamom powder and almonds to garnish.
Take a pan and melt the ghee and add the besan powder and stir it over low heat. The mix should become brownish in colour with a pasty texture. Add the sugar and the cardamom powder and mix it well. Don’t let the mixture cool down and start rolling it into small balls and garnish them with almonds or any dry fruit of your choice.

  • Makai ki Roti

Ingredients:  1 cup of Makai Atta by Desi Atta Company, 1 ½ tablespoon of ghee, 1 pinch of red chilli powder and salt to taste.
Take a bowl and mix together the flour with salt, finely chopped fenugreek leaves, chilli powder, and ghee. Knead it to make a dough and form small balls out of it to make paranthas. Take a pan and heat it with ghee and then fry the parantha over a medium flame. Wait until it’s properly fired. What’s next, you ask? Serve it hot with raita.

Ingredients:  1 cup of Chana Sattu Atta by Desi Atta Company, ½ tablespoons of carom seeds, 2 tablespoons of oil, 1 medium onion finely chopped, 1 tablespoon each of crushed ginger and garlic, green chilli crushed and salt to taste.
Take a bowl and mix the flour with carom seeds, salt, and oil to make it into a dough. Knead it well. Make the stuffing using Sattu Atta, onion, garlic, ginger and green chilli with salt and oil. Mix it well and then let it dry. Take the dough and roll them into small balls and fill it with the filling. Seal it and roll it flat in the shape of a puri and fry it over medium heat till it is ready. Serve it hot with alu sabji.

  • Bajra ki Khichdi

Ingredients:  1 cup of Bajra Atta by Desi Atta Company, 2 tablespoons of ghee or oil, 1 tablespoon cumin seeds, 1-inch ginger finely chopped, 1 green chilli, ¼ tablespoon of turmeric powder, 1 pinch hing and ½ cups of moong dal.
Take a pressure cooker and add 2 tablespoons of ghee, cumin seeds, ginger and green chilly. Stir it well and let it fry. Add Bajra Atta and turmeric powder. Cook it over low heat and then add 2 cups of water. Stir well, put the lid on and cook it under pressure for 7-8 minutes. Follow this same procedure again and let it cook for a while.

Ingredients:  1 cup of roasted suji by Desi Atta Company, 1 cup sugar, 4 cups of water, ½ cup of ghee, ¼ tablespoons of cardamom powder and almonds.
Take a saucepan, add ghee, roasted suji and stir it well over a low flame. Take another pan and mix the 1 cup of sugar in the water and heat it on low flame. After the suji turns brownish in colour, add the water mixture to it and mix well. Let it cook for some time. Serve hot with almonds as garnishing.
